Chapter Twenty-Three
Stefanie let Thomas draw her close and they climbed the hill hand-in-hand, neither one speaking.
At the crest of the hill, he lifted the hand that held hers. âThere is our shade.â
Olive trees spread across a narrow plateau. He turned her around, and a vista of hills and valleys stretched out for miles, divided by the road theyâd driven in on.
Under one of the trees not far from the path, Thomas handed her the bag with drinks and sandwiches, then snapped the blanket open and spread it out. Settling onto the blanket, Stefanie tucked her legs under her skirt and got as comfortable as the rough ground allowed.
Thomas opened the two beers and handed her one, then stretched out on the blanket near her, leaning back on one elbow. âThe question is, who has the Akrotiri Snake Goddess now?â
She gave him one sandwich and unwrapped the other.
âDerek and Ursula are the obvious suspects, since Ursula has Emmaâs phone. But neither one of them dropped the snake,â she said, studying her sandwich.
âI donât think theyâd sit casually at the beach with a priceless gold relic on hand, do you?â
âNo,â she replied. âThat wouldnât make any sense.â Derek hadnât had a bag of any kind, and Ursula left her purse unguarded enough for Stefanie to spot Emmaâs phone. No way was the snake goddess in Ursulaâs purse. âEither they turned it in, in which case it would be all over the news, or they sold it. The headlines are still all about the theft.â
âOr they never had it in the first place. Who do you think dropped the snake into your room?â
âI would have said you.â She turned the studious look in his direction. âBut you couldnât have done it and gotten upstairs that quickly.â
Thomas seemed unbothered by her perusal and finished his sandwich in just a few bites.
âI wouldnât try to scare you.â
âWhere did you go after you left my room?â
He smiled. âI followed the sidewalk that circles around the rest of the units. Didnât see anything.â
âI saw Jason last night,â she said.
âA condolence visit?â
âI was at the bar, looking for whoever dropped the snake.â
âGetting to know him better?â Thomas asked. âJason?â
âItâs funny youâre concerned,â she said. âCaptain Alexandrou warned me about you.â
âAlexandrou lives with his mother.â
Stefanie laughed. âHow would you know? Donât be jealous. Jason was drunk. He was quite appreciative that youâd asked Ursula and Derek if theyâd seen Emma.â She paused. âAnd surprised.â
âThat wasnât why I was there.â
She met his gaze. âNo, I didnât think it was.â
It was his turn to smile. âDerek flashes a lot of cash around.â
What did that mean? That heâd tried to break into Derekâs room for cash?
âI noticed that myself last night.â She kept her expression neutral, hiding her disappointment. His comment yesterday flashed into her mind. Only if youâre caught. Thatâs what heâd said when she told Gary heâd have to turn in any seal stones he found to the Greek authorities. âI needed Derekâs help to get Jason to his room. I couldnât have done it on my own.
